- 'The Door' ART PRINTS by Marta Hutt
Description:
"The Door" is a mixed media artwork in which I’ve layered portrait drawing onto a photograph I took earlier this year during a trip to my home country.
The photograph captures a door of an old house—a silent witness to countless comings and goings.
On this surface, I’ve added doodles, scribbles, and textured paint that speak to the layers of memory, adaptation, and longing tied to a building.
A building not only as a physical structure with a roof and walls—like the old house—but also as the act of constructing something new.
Accompanying the visual aspect of "The Door" is a poem I wrote, which further explores these themes. I wanted to share it with you here:
The Door
I left through a door I thought would stay open, never knowing what I would find. new life unfolded, by my own choosing, yet left a shadow deep behind.
Years have passed, and roots have tangled in foreign soil, beneath strange skies. I grew up quickly, A world unrevealed, yet still, my old home fills my eyes.
The streets I knew, the voices calling, the scent of earth after the rain— they linger still, their echoes falling a place I knew but don’t fit in.
And yet, this land where I have wandered, where time has shaped me, stone by stone, still holds me softly, yet a whisper reminds me I am not its own.
The door I took still stands behind me, but I can’t return the way I came. For every door conceals its secret, no path untouched, no step the same.
I walk between, forever longing, a heart divided, pulled in two. One door behind, another waiting, but neither one will let me through.
But time moves on, and I have drifted, the years have worn my edges thin. My homeland’s shape has slowly shifted— it knows my name, yet not my skin.
And here, where I have built a living, where language bends upon my tongue, I walk with ease, yet find no meaning in songs I’ve learned but never sung.
Between two worlds, my heart is stranded, too much of each, yet not enough. The door I chose still stands behind me, but going back feels just as tough.
This poem and the artwork together are an attempt to capture the feeling of longing :of having a foot in two different worlds, and the bittersweet nature of having two homes. It's about the doors we walk through and the paths that close behind us, the changes within ourselves, and the evolving relationship with the places we call home.
